It has been another wonderful few weeks at Kuyim Primary School, and it continues to be incredibly exciting watching our school grow in only our second year of operation. The positive energy across the school has been fantastic, with students settling beautifully into their learning routines and our classrooms full of enthusiasm, curiosity and engagement. Our staff continue to work incredibly hard to provide high quality learning opportunities for our students, and it is wonderful to see the strong sense of community that is developing across our school.
Foundation Students Now Attending Full Time
Our Foundation students have now moved into attending school full time after their 4 Wednesday assessment days, and we are so proud of how well they have managed this transition. They have settled into the routines of school life with confidence and excitement, building friendships and developing independence each day. It has been wonderful seeing them growing in confidence as learners and becoming an important part of our whole school community.
Official Opening of the Gymnasium and Basketball Court
We were incredibly proud to recently celebrate the official opening of our new gymnasium and outdoor basketball courts. The event was a wonderful success and a significant milestone for our school as we continue to grow and develop.
It is fantastic to see students making great use of these spaces, which provide wonderful opportunities for sport, physical education and whole school events for many years to come.
We would like to sincerely thank everyone who supported this event and helped make the opening such a memorable occasion for our school community.
As always, thank you for your ongoing support of Kuyim Primary School. It is wonderful to see such strong partnerships between school and families as we continue to build something very special together.
We are proud to congratulate our 2026 School Leaders at Kuyim Primary School. These students have been selected by our students for their positive attitude, leadership skills and commitment to our school values.
Our School Captains and Vice Captains will represent the student body and help lead whole-school initiatives, while our Cultural Captain and Sustainability Captain will play an important role in promoting inclusion, respect for diversity and caring for our environment. Our House Captains will encourage teamwork and school spirit during sporting and other whole school events, and our Student Representative Council (SRC) members will work together to share student voice and contribute ideas that help make our school an even better place.

We are incredibly proud of the students who represented Kuyim Primary School at the District Swimming Championships. Our students demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship, determination and team spirit throughout the day. In an incredible achievement for a school in only its second year, Kuyim Primary School finished second overall for the second year in a row. This is a fantastic result and a reflection of the effort and commitment shown by our swimmers. All students who participated should feel extremely proud of their efforts and the way they represented our school.
A Message From Mrs Overdyk
Our students had a very successful day at the District Swimming Carnival, with all 13 participants showing fantastic effort and sportsmanship. The competition was tough, and we were proud to finish second overall in the Officer District. A special moment was seeing Niharika proudly accept the flag on behalf of our school.
Thank you to the parents who were able to transport and support our students on the day. It was a wonderful event and a great experience for everyone involved.
On Thursday 2nd April we will be holding our House Cross Country event. Students are encouraged to wear their house colours on the day, and ribbons will be awarded to place getters. Parents and carers are welcome to attend this event.

On Thursday 19th March we will be celebrating Harmony Day at Kuyim Primary School. Harmony Day is a wonderful opportunity for our school community to celebrate the rich cultural diversity that makes our school such a special place.
Families are warmly invited to participate by bringing a plate of food to share for lunch, representing your culture or a favourite family dish. Students are also encouraged to come dressed in traditional cultural clothing, their cultural colours, or something orange, which is the official colour of Harmony Day and represents respect, inclusion and belonging.
In the afternoon we will hold a special Harmony Day Assembly beginning at 2:25 pm. During this assembly our students will participate in a cultural parade, proudly sharing their cultural dress and celebrating the diversity of our community. We will also be holding our Student Leadership Badge Ceremony, where our student leaders will officially receive their badges. We warmly welcome families to attend this special assembly and celebrate with us.
Our students have made a very positive start to the school year and have settled back into their classroom routines well. As the term progresses, it is important that students re-establish strong home reading habits. Regular nightly reading plays a significant role in developing fluency, comprehension and confidence. Students who read consistently and build strong routines at home are more likely to experience success in their learning at school. We greatly appreciate the continued support from families in encouraging and supporting nightly reading.
The State Government has developed a helpful resource as part of its Literacy and Numeracy Strategy. Literacy and Numeracy Tips to Help Your Child Every Day provides parents with simple, fun, and affordable activities that can easily be done at home to support the development of children’s literacy and numeracy skills.
The online version of this resource can be accessed on the Department of Education website here:

Supporting Children with Anxiety
At Kuyim Primary School, our staff are committed to supporting students’ wellbeing and helping children develop strategies to manage feelings of anxiety while building resilience.
Some of the ways we support students include:
Starting Conversations with Your Child
Conversations can have a powerful impact on children’s wellbeing. Creating an environment where children feel safe to talk openly and seek support is something we all strive for.
Ask questions and listen
Asking thoughtful questions can help children express how they are feeling and what they are experiencing. Open questions such as “How did that make you feel?” or “What was that like for you?” can help children share their thoughts more comfortably.
Think about the time and place
Sometimes conversations happen more naturally when children are not sitting face-to-face. Talking while walking, driving, cooking or doing an activity together can make children feel more relaxed and willing to share.
Be patient and supportive
When children open up about a problem, they often want to feel heard rather than have the problem immediately fixed. Listening calmly and responding with patience can help them feel supported and understood.
It is also important to remember that children may not always be ready to talk straight away. Simply letting them know that you are there to listen can make it easier for them to open up when they feel comfortable.
If you continue to have concerns about your child, it may be helpful for another trusted adult, such as a family member, teacher or support person, to help start a conversation.
Children are far more likely to share when they feel safe, supported and know they will not be judged.
Conversation Starters for Children
Sometimes simple questions can help start meaningful conversations with your child. Here are a few ideas you may like to try:
Not every question will lead to a long conversation, and that is perfectly okay. Finding the questions your child responds to best often takes a little trial and error.
With so much time spent on devices and messaging, taking opportunities to have real conversations with children is more important than ever. Continuing to engage in regular conversations helps build trust, strengthens relationships and supports children’s wellbeing.
