As we move through Term 3, we look forward to continuing our learning journey together in a supportive and engaging environment for all students at Kuyim Primary School. The remainder of the term offers many exciting opportunities for growth, learning and connection, and we are excited to see our students continue to thrive.
Mother’s Day Celebration
Thank you to our mothers and special friends for joining us on the afternoon of Friday 8th of May and to the parents who assisted with the Mother’s Day Stall. Our students loved having you at school and sharing their special gifts with you all.
National Simultaneous Storytime 2026
Last Wednesday students participated in a story shared by students across Australia at 12 noon. They listened to "Luna Roo the Kangaroo Baller"; the story follows a spirited kangaroo and her friends as they chase their football dreams. It’s an underdog tale about teamwork, courage, and overcoming nerves.
Brainstorm Productions
We were thrilled to host a performance by Brainstorm Productions, “The Protectors”. Students and staff shared an engaging performance which provided practical strategies for bullying prevention, online safety, social skills and emotion regulation. The students enjoyed the opportunity of a live performance and will be following this learning into the classroom.
Division Cross Country Success
Congratulations to all our students who participated in the Division Cross Country event last Wednesday. Well done to all six participants who represented Kuyim Primary School.
Foundation C, Yr 1A and Yr 1B temporary classroom relocation
From Monday 15th of June these three classes will be relocated to the yellow learning hub for a 4-5 week period while construction works are occurring in their current classroom area. Parents will be asked to pick students up from the performance space outside the yellow learning hub where we held our school opening smoking ceremony. We will send out a map outlining relocated classrooms closer to the date. Staff will be involving students in the relocation process to support their smooth transition.
Prep 2027 Enrolment
Enrolments for Prep/Foundation 2027 are now open! If you have a child who will be starting Prep next year, please get in touch with our school office to access all the necessary enrolment information.
The Department of Education has introduced a new Prep enrolment process, with enrolments closing on July 31st, 2026 (Term 3). We look forward to hearing from you and welcoming new little learners to our school community next year!
School Tours
We are excited to welcome prospective families for tours of our school. I have the pleasure of conducting the tours and I am always proud to be showcasing what makes our school special. If you know of a family considering joining our school community, please encourage them to contact the office. Veronika or Lisa (office staff) will personally get in touch with them to arrange a suitable time for a tour with me.
Student Learning Progress
Semester 1 (mid-year reports) progress reports are due to be forwarded to parents and carers through Sentral on Wednesday the 24th of June. This report will be providing parents and carers with a progress update on how your child has progressed in these learning areas through the first part of Term 1 and Term 2. Due to industrial action, some student reports will be indicating student achievement against the Victorian Curriculum 2.0 without requiring full written comments. Parent Teacher Interviews will be conducted on Monday 27th of July .
Spare clothes
As we experience more wet weather, I encourage parents and carers to pack a spare set of clothes in students’ bags in case they slip over and become wet. We do not currently have spare clothes in the school to change the children into.
begins to cool, please remember that our school jacket, beanie and scarf can be purchased through Noone to maintain wearing full school uniform. Healthy Snacks and Lunches:
We encourage all students to bring healthy snacks and lunches to school. Please remember we are a sustainable school and all non-recyclable rubbish returns home in your child’s lunch box.
Zones of Regulation
Kuyim Primary School uses the Zones of Regulation approach. This assists students to understand their emotions and how they affect their learning. Being able to self -regulate and be aware of their own emotions is an important aspect of this approach. Being in the green zone is when children are focused and ready to learn. They are given strategies to recognise which zone they are in and how to move into the best zone for learning. Students are learning about the Zones in their classes and the strategies which they can use to help them in each zone.

We’d like to remind families of the importance of timely school attendance. Every minute counts and arriving on time ensures students don’t miss vital instructions at the start of the day. School begins promptly at 8:45 am, and we encourage all students to arrive on time to make the most of their learning opportunities.
It can be very disruptive, both for your child and for others, if they enter the classroom after the initial instructions for the day have been given. This time is crucial for setting up the day's schedule, providing important information, and communicating any changes to what students may have expected. If your child arrives late, they will miss out on this important information and will likely fall behind for the rest of the day.
I encourage you to visit the Department of Education and Training website, where you’ll find plenty of information about the importance of daily school attendance. Being on time is just as critical, as lateness has the same negative impact on your child's learning as missing school altogether.
Of course, if your child is unwell or needs to isolate, please keep them at home. We understand these situations.
Just a bit late doesn’t seem much but…
He/she is only missing just... | That equals... | Which is... | And over 13 years of schooling that’s... |
10 minutes per day | 50 minutes per week | Nearly 1.5 weeks per year | Nearly Half a Year |
20 minutes per day | 1 hour 40 mins per week | Over 2.5 weeks per year | Nearly 1 year |
Half an hour per day | Half a day per week | 4 weeks per year | Nearly 1 and a half years |
1 hour per day | 1 day per week | 8 weeks per year | 2 and a half years |
Did you know your child’s best learning time is the start of the school day? That’s when every minute counts the most!!!! |
Last week, our students enthusiastically participated in National Simultaneous Storytime, enjoying the heartwarming story Luna Roo by Adam Jackson and Adrian Lloyd. The story follows Luna, a young kangaroo who learns about belonging, friendship, and being proud of who you are. Students loved logging on and reading along with thousands of students and schools across Australia during this special event. The story follows Luna, a young kangaroo who learns about belonging, friendship, and being proud of who you are. Students loved logging on and reading along with thousands of students and schools across Australia during this special event.
To connect with the story, students completed a creative kangaroo craft activity where they designed and decorated kangaroos wearing colourful soccer jerseys. Through their designs, students were able to show creativity, individuality, and teamwork, just like the themes explored in Luna Roo. Take a look at their amazing designs below!

Growing, Creating and Exploring
There has been plenty of curiosity, creativity and hands-on learning happening across Science and Art this term.
In Science, students have been investigating the living world around them. From exploring what plants need to survive and grow, to classifying animals, studying life cycles, investigating ecosystems and food webs, and even examining plant and animal cells, students have been developing their observation, questioning and scientific thinking skills. Our younger students have enjoyed learning about the needs of plants and animals, while older students have been exploring how living things are connected within environments across the globe.
One of the highlights of the term has been our whole-school contribution to the Reconciliation Week mural, All In, I'm In. Every student created a small artwork representing themselves, helping to build a vibrant collaborative display that celebrates belonging, connection and the unique contributions each person brings to our school community. The finished mural is a wonderful reminder that we are stronger when everyone has a place and a voice.
In Art, students have explored portraiture through a range of face-themed artworks inspired by artists such as Picasso and Pop Art traditions. Bold colours, creative compositions and individual expression have been on display throughout the school, with many works currently featured in the library.
Students are now beginning an exciting new chapter in their artistic journey as they move into sculpture.
We look forward to sharing more of our students' scientific discoveries and artistic creations as the year continues.

Foundation B Scientists sorting (classifying)
On Wednesday 3rd June, Kuyim Primary School student leaders travelled to Officer Secondary College to participate in the Cultural Leaders Conference. Throughout the day, students took part in a range of activities designed to develop connections with other student leaders from different schools. They also enjoyed a guided tour of Officer Secondary College, learning about the facilities and opportunities available to students. One of the highlights of the day was making traditional damper in the school's pizza oven. Students also met with Koorie students and had the opportunity to ask questions, gaining valuable insight into the Koorie program and learning more about Aboriginal culture, leadership and education pathways.

Students in Years 3-6 will be participating in online ESafety sessions in coming weeks. The Yr 5/6 class will join in Be an eSafe kid: Use your safety skills for protection online. Students will discover how to protect themselves online with practical tools such as managing strong passphrases, privacy settings and personal information. Our Yr 3/4 students will view Be an eSafe kid: Safer Gaming with the Mighty Heroes. This webinar will help Year 3 and 4 students navigate friendships while gaming online using the skills of respect, responsibility and getting help and support. Students will meet the Mighty Heroes along the way and discover how they can apply these skills to stay safe and enjoy gaming and communicating online.
Parent information is provided on the eSafety website, providing advice and resources for keeping you and your family safe online. I encourage you to read the advice for parents to help promote safe and positive online experiences for children. https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents
During Term Three, students across the school will be exploring a range of textile art experiences during their visual art sessions. Students will be experimenting with collage, fabric layering, stitching, texture, and mixed media to create imaginative and highly individual artworks.
Thanks to the generosity of our school community last year, we already have a wonderful collection of materials to begin with. We would greatly appreciate any additional donations of textile-related items that families may have at home and no longer need.
We would welcome donations such as:
• fabric scraps
• wool, thread or embroidery cotton
• buttons
• sequins or beads
• lace or ribbon
• felt
• hessian
• small textile offcuts
• other interesting craft or sewing materials
Donations can be brought to the school office.
Thank you for supporting our art program and helping provide creative opportunities for our students.
Kind regards,
Ellyn Maykan
