Our School Name
The 2025 new school names were chosen with input from Geographic Names Victoria, Traditional Owner groups and via public consultation. Community preferences helped shape the final decision on each school name.
We take all feedback into account when finalising a school name. Following the community consultation, we get a final review by the Traditional Owner groups. They are the authority on Aboriginal languages. It is important we respect their views and are guided by them.
Why do you use Aboriginal names? Why don’t you use geographic names?
In 2023, the government announced that Aboriginal language names would be preferenced for new schools and campuses in an initiative to further promote Aboriginal self-determination, language and culture across the state.
All new schools opened in 2024 also had Aboriginal language names.
